Show-and-Tell #72: Grandfather Bear

Last week my parents went on a quick trip to Grandfather Mountain.  They had a great time exploring, shopping, hiking, braving the mile-high bridge, and mainly, just relaxing.  They were nice enough to bring us back some gifts from their trip.  Danny and I will hopefully enjoy our two bottles of wine soon and Emerson loves her new cuddly friend, Mr. Bear (not his official name).  We haven't named this cutie yet, but I am sure we will come up with something soon.  See the excerpt below about the legend of Mildred the Bear, this little bear is a stuffed version of one of her cubs.

In 1968, a local wildlife club asked Grandfather Mountain to participate in a black bear propagation program. Visitor Center Manager Winston Church was sent to the Atlanta Zoo to bring back a pair of bears for release the following spring. It was not until his return to North Carolina that Church realized he had two male bears. Arrangements were made to return to Atlanta for a female. By accident he was given the zoo's pet, which was raised by the office staff.

The two bears were retained in a holding cage until spring, when the male was released. He ran into the forest, never to be seen again. The staff waited to release the friendlier female because the Arthur Smith television crew was filming a show and wanted to use her in a video version of a tune called "The Preacher and the Bear." It was Brother Ralph Smith who gave his new co-star the nickname "Mildred."

Mildred preferred human company and refused to depart for the woods. She hung around and pestered the camera crew all day and when they finished filming, Mildred strayed into the valley in search of companionship. After several days of upturning trash cans at local homes, Mildred was returned by wildlife officials to Grandfather Mountain for safe-keeping.

For several summers, Mildred and her cubs, Mini and Maxi, posed for pictures three times a day, returning to their cages between "shows." Then, in 1973, Mildred and her family moved into a spacious environmental habitat built in one of the most picturesque spots on the mountain. The large enclosure allows the bears to make real dens and to seek privacy when they need it. Considered the most humane concept in zoo enclosures, the Grandfather habitats are truly the most natural setting possible for these bears.

Maybe we will name this one Maxi!!!

Show-and-Tell #71: Pillow Pet

Friday, for Show-and-Tell, Emerson decided to take her pillow pet bunny she received this past Easter from the Easter Bunny.  As of yet, we have no name for the bunny other than, Pillow Pet.  Hopefully, a name will emerge soon, as this is quickly growing to be a favorite sleeping pal.

Show-and-Tell #70: Memory Game

This past Friday Emerson took her Alex Princess Memory Game to school for Show-and-Tell.  Danny got her this on one of his trips last year.  Emerson loves to play memory on Danny's phone and now the IPad and she's actually pretty good at it.  I'm not sure she prefers the actual game version to the computerized versions but we still get it out to play from time-to-time.

Show-and-Tell #69: Dumbo

Yesterday, Emerson decided to take her new baby Dumbo to school for Show-and-Tell. She got this Dumbo on the last day of our Disney trip at Animal Kingdom.  Who wouldn't be able to resist this face and those ears and even the baby swaddle?  Too cute!!!  Even though Emerson hasn't seen the Dumbo movie, she fell in love.  It's also pretty special to both of us because one of the lullabies I sang to Emerson as a baby, and even sometimes now, was "Baby Mine" from the Dumbo movie.  It's one of my all-time favorite lullabies.  I included videos below so you could see just how great it is!!

Show-and-Tell #68: Lolly

This past Friday for Show-and-Tell, Emerson took her new Giraffe.  That morning, when talking about the Giraffe, I asked Emerson her name and she promptly replied, "Lolly!".  So, Lolly it was!!  We've talked about the name Lolly recently.  Mimi's name was going to be Lolly before it was Mimi and I have a friend whose nickname is Lolly.  Emerson received this Giraffe from her Daddy.  Basically she has him wrapped around her little finger and after seeing Lolly within all the Beach Ball packages sprawled out at my house during April, she fell in love.  She begged and begged for Daddy to "win" the package at the Beach Ball event.  Danny knew he had to come home with the Giraffe, and he did....along with 5 more packages!!!

Show-and-Tell #67: Chloe...the second!!

We haven't been that great about getting pictures on Friday mornings and posting Show-and-Tell items.  So, hopefully this post will revive our Show-and-Tell series.  You may remember the first Chloe Show-and-Tell post about Emerson's cute stuffed puppy.  Well, we now have a second Chloe in our house that could be the first Chloe's mommy.  We found this adorable stuffed puppy at Marbles Kid's Museum a few weekends ago on our visit with Mimi.  Upon seeing it, Emerson had to have it, and of course, Mimi obliged!!  It was hard not to resist this cute face that reminded us so much of the real Chloe that isn't with us anymore.  Emerson talks about the real Chloe all the time, even though they never met, and this new stuffed Chloe made her day!!!

Show-and-Tell #66: Baby Fisher #2

A few weeks ago, Aunt Sissy was staying with Mimi for a few days.  Mimi watched Emerson on Saturday night while Danny and I attended the UNC vs. Duke game.  It was such a treat for Emerson to spend time with her Aunt Sissy.  She loves Sissy!!!  Sissy of course spoiled her rotten bringing her lots of treats, including another Fisher doll.  You may remember Fisher from the first time Emerson took #1 to school.  Fisher is, by far, Emerson's favorite doll.  She loves Fisher, sleeps with her every night, takes her on adventures, and treats her like a real baby.  So you can imagine her surprise when Aunt Sissy gave Emerson another Fisher to take care of.  Thanks Sissy for the wonderful gifts, Fisher #1 is excited to have a Fisher #2 to play with!!

Show-and-Tell #65: Tiana

This past Friday for Show-and-Tell Emerson took one of her Disney princesses, a gift from Daddy after his most recent business trip.  Although Emerson has only seen the Princess and the Frog once, she loves Tiana!  We are slowly completing the entire princess set, maybe a new princess will be added to the collection this week while we are at Disney!

Show-and-Tell #64: MGM Lions

On Friday for Show-and-Tell, Emerson took her Mommy and baby lions that Danny and I recently brought her back from our trip to Vegas.  If you've never been to Vegas and you ever get the chance to go, you have to go see the lions at the MGM.  I love wild cats (lions, panthers, tigers)...love them!!  I just think they are so majestic!  I had seen the lions on previous trips to Vegas but I got drawn in again and was in a trance for about 30 minutes just watching them play.  I thought Emerson would really enjoy seeing my pictures and then having two lions of her own.  We haven't named the lions yet, but I can tell you they have joined the ranks of her bedtime friends!!

Here are some pictures of the real MGM lions.  You can tell they are just cubs because they still have their spots on their back legs.  I could just jump in their habitat with them, but the guys you see in there have been with cubs since birth and the cubs consider them part of the pack.

Look at those paws...they are as big as Emerson's head!!

Show-and-Tell #63: Snow Globe (repeat)

Last Friday, December 17th, the day of Emerson's Christmas pageant at her daycare, she decided to take her Cinderella snow globe for Show-and-Tell.  This is a repeat from last years Show-and-Tell #19.  I can't believe this is the first repeat in 63 Show-and-Tell items, that's pretty impressive or it just proves we have a lot of toys!!!  I have a feeling we will see this snow globe around the same time next year!!

Show-and-Tell #62: Shhh!!

Since we finally put out all our Christmas decorations last week, Emerson grabbed her Shh!!! Santa book from her Christmas decoration bin and decided it was going to be her Show-and-Tell for the week.  I had to read the book to her so she could remember the story, especially since she only gets to read it a few times a year during the holidays.  She was very excited to share the story of Santa delivering toys to all the little girls and boys all while trying to very quiet to all her friends at school.

Show-and-Tell #61: Gymnastics Medal

You may remember my post about a birthday party Emerson attended at our local gymnastics facility.  You also may recall that each child received a medal for the gymnastic "skill" at the party.  Emerson's medal hangs on her closet door, she wears it around the house occasionally and last Friday, she wanted to take it for Show-and-Tell.  Maybe one day she'll have a real medal!!

Show-and-Tell #60: Leap Frog Scribble & Write

Last Friday Emerson took her Leap Frog Scribble & Write to school for Show-and-Tell.  Emerson first experienced this toy with her friend Aurora.  Danny and I were so impressed by this learning tool that we immediately headed to Target to buy this for Emerson.  This has quickly become one of Emerson's favorite car toys.  She has logged hours of educational scribbling and writing on this device.  Let's hope it keeps her entertained for many more!!!

Show-and-Tell #59: Thomas

Last week Emerson decided to take her Thomas The Tank Engine toy for Show-and-Tell.  She got this toy from Danny after one of his many recent trips.  It's probably the most non-girly toy she owns, but she loves Thomas!!

Show-and-Tell #58: Princess Wand

We've again fallen behind on blogging about Show-and-Tell, so it's time to play catch up.  Emerson took her Princess Wand to school a few weeks ago for Show-and-Tell.  This was a gift from me when I went away for work the first week in September.  Daddy always brings Emerson presents, so I had to search for a great gift to give her for when I returned after a few days away.  She's still playing with it, so I'll take that as a sign she still likes it!!

Show-and-Tell #57: Mummy Cookies!!!

Yea, I totally cheated last week with Show-and-Tell.  We had a pretty hectic morning getting out the door (well, Danny did) and and I was no help with forgetting to send something to school with Emerson for Show-and-Tell with Emerson.  So, when I got there for the Halloween Parade I snapped this shot of her holding the Halloween Treats and told her to tell all her friends about the Mummy cookies.  Quick thinking by me and a long stretch....hey, she did share them with all her friends; they each got one to take home!!!  That's a perfect Show-and-Tell....(wink, wink)!!!

Show-and-Tell #56: Sleeping Beauty

Last Friday, Emerson took another princess present from her daddy that she received after one of his trips.  I swear, had Danny or I been thinking clearly, it would have been much easier and cheaper to buy the entire princess collection at Target and then just give them to Emerson one at a time.  But now that Danny has started buying them individually, I guess we have to continue down that route.  Lesson well learned!!! So, here is Emerson and Sleeping Beauty (sans shoes and crown, as to not get lost at school).

Show-and-Tell #55 : Ladybug Girl!!

I've skipped several weeks of Show-and-Tell.  It is has been too hectic around here on Friday mornings and/or afternoons to get pictures, and then the weekend comes and, well you know, stuff happens!!  So, I am picking up where we left off, just a few weeks later.  At least the items she took can now be repeated and actually make it to the blog.

So, last Friday, Emerson took one of her favorite books Ladybug Girl at the Beach.  Mimi gave Emerson this book for her 3rd birthday.  We had to read it that night and it has been a staple in our reading repertoire ever since.  I think Emerson just wants to be Ladybug Girl and do all the things she does.

Show-and-Tell #'s 52, 53, & 54

I am pretty far behind in blogging (more than three weeks worth).  So to kill three birds with one stone (I've always hated that saying....I don't condone killing birds, but it gets my point across), I have decided to combine the last three Show-and-Tells into one blog post!!!

Show-and-Tell #52
Chloe
September 3, 2010
Chloe, or Lola as I called her, was my childhood dog.  She was a present from my mom and dad for Christmas my freshmen year of high school.  She was so cute and so cuddly, she was also pretty feisty and sometimes it was debatable if she was sweet or not.  Hogan and Chloe had a love/hate relationship; to be honest, my dad had that same love/hate relationship with Chloe.  She LOVED my mom, and you could usually find Chloe in my mom's lap or at the bottom of her bed. Anyway, while we had Chloe, one of my mom's nurses gave her this Ty Beanie Baby cocker spaniel.  This beanie baby sat on my mom's desk in her office for years.  Recently, in preparation for her retirement in December, my mom started to clean out her office.  She brought home "Chloe" and gave her to Emerson.  Emerson knows about Chloe and knows that before she was born, Chloe had to go to heaven. (We had to put Chloe to sleep a couple of years ago; that was a very sad day in the Bandy/Dever households).  So, recently Chloe has become a regular in the plethora of animals that sleep with Emerson.  We miss Chloe so much, I am pretty sure Emerson would have loved her, especially since she loves any dog she sees.  Miss you bunches, Lola!!!!
(Not the best picture of Chloe but still cute!!!)

Belle
September 10, 2010
I was out of town on this date, and Danny had Emerson all by himself.  I must say, he did a great job, much to my worry.  It was Emerson's first week of preschool (which meant a new routine), first soccer practice, and dance class.  I was a very organized mom, and laid out everything for him by day, including all school outfits, soccer outfits, book bags, Show-and-Tell items, dance outfits, shoes, underwear, forms that had to be turned in, etc.  I didn't, however, remember to tell him to take a picture of Emerson on Show-and-Tell day, and I had the camera with me in Richmond.  So, needless to say, we don't have a picture of Emerson with her new beloved Belle, that was brought to her by her dad after his last trip.  We are quickly growing the princess collection in the Dever household.

Lambie
September 17, 2010
Lambie was given to Emerson by her Mimi when she was an infant and has been a permanent fixture on Emerson's dresser ever since.  You may remember a post, a long time ago, about Emerson and her first AMEN.  We started praying every night using Lambie, because when you press Lambie's belly, she starts in with our nighttime prayer.....

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the lord my soul to keep
May angels watch me through the night
Until I wake with mornings light

Show-and-Tell #51: Baby Cinderella

Last Friday, August 27, Emerson decided she wanted to take her baby Cinderella to school for Show-and-Tell, since she had taken the "Mommy Cinderella" a few weeks earlier.  Baby Cinderella was brought back recently from one of Danny's many trips.  Emerson was so excited to have the baby version of Cinderella.  She loves to play with Mommy and Baby....if only Emerson and I could be as glamorous as the Cinderellas!!!
